 "overpriced ?" 2009-08-12
By J. Biggers (North Carolina)
Overpriced? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on what you expect it to do. It works well in small rooms that do not have tons of dust, smoke, or mold. And it is quiet at least on the low speed.

But I've found it cheaper ($10 less per replacement filter) at a local Target store.

By K. adamson (TN)
Like the other reviewer said, this air cleaner isn't good for a bedroom. but it only advertises 100 sq. ft. So I think it performs as stated. If the air filter is clogged you can vacuum it clean. It's suppose to last for 6 months. I bought it for my desk cubicle at work. It works great for that. The replacement filters are high ($20) and I didn't know the UV light wasn't replaceable, so that's why I gave it 4 stars.

"just too much for one little guy to handle..." 2008-06-16
By A. Berger (College Station, TX)
I think germ guardian makes some very good products. I own a few of their plug in GG-1000 UV germ/odor killers and I like them. I got this unit because it had actual particle filtration and carbon filtration for odor removal. It looks like a great all in one package from a company that is making a decent name for themselves thus far in the all too marketing based field of air purification.

This unit is SMALL, and I mean small.. 8" x 6" x 3.5" It has a TINY air filter with a terribly high price tag to replace. For comparison, many other units which are large and have excellent consumer ratings cost less to replace the filter. The internal UV light is non-replaceable and the company makes no claim towards its longevity. It seems unlikely the light will last more than a few months.

The unit functioned well for a few days but after that its tiny filter became so clogged it barely output any air. The unit is not very quiet like the GG-1000 units when on high speed. Air output on low speed is negligible. In my opinion the unit would be adequate to purify the air volume of a car not a room.

I have owned the unit less than 2 weeks and I just purchased a 3M FAP02-RS to replace it. Hopefully I can take it back to big box mart with the replacement filter I already bought for it. There is no way I will change a filter out every two weeks just to keep it running correctly. Perhaps this is my fault, the size alone of this unit suggests its inability to handle a small bedroom. I had my doubts but I liked the GG-1000s.

Looking at the product description here, it says the filter is washable. Uhm.. it is made out of paper and NOTHING in the documentation (or common sense) suggests washing it. This "Photo-Catalytic Oxidation" is not mentioned anywhere on the product or the parent website. A little excess marketing for the local crowd I guess. In my opinion, its a small fan, a paper filter, and a cheap unreplaceable (magic) light bulb in a unit about the same size as my external hard drive. How much affect do you really think that will have?

It's called a table top air purifier with no real mention of how much it can really handle. I think calling it a dashboard air purifier might be more appropriate. It works a little bit but it truly fell short of my expectations and I doubt I will even waste the electricity on it much longer. You can get a good purifier with a much higher capacity in this price range.

On a final note, UV-C light kills germs at a slow/moderate pace. As I understand it, the air must be in contact with the light for some period of time before it will become effective at killing the bad stuff. A air filter must move large quantities of air through a filter to be effective at physical removal of contaminants. This unit tries to do both and I feel like it is a miss at least for mechanical filtration.

 "Think Twice" 2009-01-24
By Duane Curtis (USA)
I'm in the market for a good air purifier and this model, Hygia 6 / AC6000, was a candidate. Until I found out about not being able to replace the UV Lamp.

Here is the story. I looked around on Germ Guardian's website. They are the makers (Or distributors) of the Hygia 6. I was unable to find a replacement lamp for this purifier on the website. So I decided to give them a call to find out a price and also see how well their customer service was.

After 2 days of nobody answering the phone I decided to write them an email. I wrote them asking for a price on a replacement lamp and if I would be able to change it (their downloadable instruction manual states the lamp is not user replaceable). A few days later I received a reply telling me the lamp is in fact not replaceable. Here is the direct quote from the email, "The UV-C light is not a replaceable part for the AC6000." This seems very strange to me as UV lamps don't last forever.

I wrote customer service back asking another question. They have not responded.

While I don't own this product I thought this information should be shared so anyone considering this item knows the facts.

Update: Here is another response from customer support: "If the bulb were to stop working, then your warranty (limited 2 year) on the product would take effect. We recommend saving a copy of your sales receipt, and also registering your product. "

"Hygia 6 not for everyone" 2008-10-28
By Rodney Gibbons (Winchester, VA)
HYGIA 6.0 AC-6000 Complete Air Cleansing System

If you suffer from Sick Office Syndrome or are sensitive to off-gassing from electronic computer and office equipment, this product is not for you.

This unit is made by Germguardian. Due to a design flaw of positioning of the fan after the air leaves the filter assembly instead of before, results in fan motor off-gassing causing a smoke smell. It ends of contributing to the chemical fumes it is designed to filter. I spoke with Germguardian about this and they state that the air leaving the filter is 99% pure and clean, but would not acknowledge or deny that the fan motor could emit any fumes during operation.

As I stated before, unless you are sensitive to the off-gassing, you probably won't notice the smoke smell.

What really upsets me is that the company I purchased it from, The Allergy Buyers Club, would not allow me to return it without an 30% restocking fee, including shipping to and from costs.

I you plan to buy this unit, make sure you understand the return policy.

"One year later and still working like new" 2008-09-18
By Patrick (Largo, MD USA)
I bought this last year 9/07. I waited because prior posts always say how great an air purifier works after a few weeks. My daughter and I have severe allergies pollen, dust, smoke, etc....

******** Positives: ***********

1. It's extremely quite on most settings. Even on high it's not very loud.

2. Does not produce Ozone.

3. It works. I have several air purifiers. This one cleans the air just as good or better than all the ones I have(1 Oreck Pro, 2 Hamilton Beach, 1 Plasmawave and 2 Hygia 6). I tested this unit with the others. With regards to room size I have vaulted ceilings so the rooms are large. When the wife sprays chemicals like(Starch when ironing, hairspray, bathroom cleaners) the Hygia picks up the chemical and turns up a level to clean the air. All the other purifiers missed these chemicals unless they are sprayed right in front of the purifier. My hygia is next to the bed in the corner and is at least 20 feet away from the bathroom (remember this is with Vaulted Ceiling).

4. In the kitchen I set the Ionic on and it cleans the air. Much faster and better than my Oreck. I leave the Oreck in the kitchen do to the Truman Cell. Saves on filters, but it takes forever to clean out fryoil smell, smoke from foods, garlic etc....

5. The filters are easy to clean and hold up very well. I replace my Hamiltons every 6-8 months and they are black. My hygia is a year old. The filter is dark but not black. The 6 levels of filteration trap alot of stuff prior to the hepa.

6. NO SMELL AFTER A YEAR. All hepas start to smell bad! I took this to Disney to clean the air in the room, so this hygia has been all over. Yet the filteration is so pure it destroys odors. No mildewy black smut hepa filters unless you try to extend the hepa beyond a year. My other hepas stink with no warning. You go into the basement and realize it's time to replace the hepa on my other systems.

7. It cuts down on spreading germs. My daughter is in Kindergarden and is already been sick twice. Asthma turns to Chest infection = a lot of coughing and hacking. She's been sick twice and yet this system seems to absorb the germs. No one else (other daughter and wife and I) got sick. Before the Hygia the other filters seem to blow the germs around. So far (knock on wood) this seems to absorb germs. I may help that I have 2 Hygias. One in her room and 1 in ours.

8. Nice handle. Light and easy to move.

******* Negatives: ********

1. It does not clean large rooms fast. My kitchen has an island and it takes awhile to clean the air. My master bed room is also large and it kicks up to high to clean the air. The ionic switch seems to speed it up.

I leave the Oreck in kitchen.

2. It doesnt clean harsher smells unless ionic is on. I dont mind the option but some do. The plasmawave was horrible. Felt like skin was irritated when plasmawave was running(No longer own).

Conclussion:

I still use the 2 Hamiltons in the basement only because they are good hepas and clean 300square feet. This Hygia out performs all of them. They need to make a bigger unit. I would like to get one for the whole level rather than get one for each room. I have 2 and will probably order 1 more.

 "Smelled after six months" 2009-10-06
By Darius Bean (San Francisco Bay Area)
1. Annoying, bright blue light. The light makes it difficult to sleep with (I had this in my bedroom). I put black electrical tape over the two light slits, thereby ghetto-fying a previously awesome looking unit.

2. Noisy fan. The noise is difficult to sleep with. Dialing it down to the lowest speed makes it tolerable, but it feels weird knowing it's at its lowest.

3. Accumulated a lot of dust. The dust on the filter is easy to clean but good luck cleaning the dust from the fan and in the surrounding areas at the bottom. Compressed air only gets the loosest dust out, but on mine there was a stubborn layer of dust that was difficult to get to (and likely impossible without disassembling the unit).

4. Smelled bad. This happened after six months, and may have been partially my fault - I sprayed Chamomile fragrance near it, and I think the unit sucked it in. The smell came from inside the unit, and smelled *bad*. I think the fragrance may have stuck to the accumulated dust and the combo of the two made a stinky odor. I hope it's not mold or bacteria (uh, the unit is supposed to eliminate that?).

I couldn't figure out how to clean the bottom stink out of the bottom of the unit (the top of the unit was easy to clean because it's easily accessible), so I threw it out. I had learned to live with it for the first 6 months that it was odor free, but I'm definitely NOT getting this again for the bedroom.

[UPDATE] Ok, I ended up disassembling/dismantling the thing before I finally threw it out. The remaining odor was mostly around the dust covered fan unit. I did some googling, and I think the smell was from the chamomile spray residue (on the dust and the other surfaces) getting rancid - I am not a chemist but supposedly UV light helps certain things get rancid! On the other hand, disassembling the unit made me appreciate the craftsmanship and design. My only wish was for a way that I could have cleaned out that bottom area of the unit.

since I started using personal air purifiers on airplanes, I went from always getting sick at the start of my vacation to now staying healthy the whole time!  "Love it!" 2009-03-26
By Woofie Mom (Pacific NW USA)
I purchased this little negative ion air purifier because I respond very positively to negative ions, they lift my mood and keep me alert. Plus I have asthma and allergies and thought maybe it would help with that too and it does seem to.

The rechargeable battery holds a charge for quite a long time and the charger doesn't take up a lot of space. The blue light that tells you it's on and working is nice, but can be quite bright in a dark room even when wearing it backwards The blue light makes it very easy to tell when it's turned off or when the charge has run down. As far as the positive effects of the negative ions it is not quite as effective for me as a larger negative ion filter, but it DOES help and you can't wear a tower filter :) The size and weight are great. My only complaint is that the strap is not adjustable for people with larger necks. If you struggle with depression and find you feel better after it rains or snows, try one of these negative ion filters!

I actually hung this over the handle of my infant daughters car seat when we traveled on an airplane. She didn't get sick on the numerous trans-america flights we took which is a good thing. I did attempt to reach the manufacturer of this product twice, leaving detailed messages both times to make sure it was safe to use this product around an infant but they never got back to me which I found extremely rude and annoying, thus only 3 stars. I went ahead and hung it up anyway though my husband teased me mercilessly and told me I'd probably spent $30 on a blue light. (it makes no noise, but a blue light turns on) I didn't care, planes are nasty.

I bought two of these recently; one for me and one for my wife for a recent trip to Europe. We both wore them on the flight over (from Chicago to Frankfort) and both of us arrived in tip top shape. After a week of traveling about the Continent, mine had somehow been shoved in a bag with the power switch on (and we did not bring the chargers which will work on 220 with an adapter plug - which is not supplied). My wife's unit did work for the trip back (from Zurich to Washington, D.C.). The bottom line is that I had a miserable cold for the week following the trip and my wife came back with no symptoms at all.

So for $30, it appears to be a good investment.

"100% Worth the Purchase Price" 2009-06-22
By V. Harrison (San Jose, CA USA)
I bought the large air purifier and two of wall plug versions in 2007, and they're still running strong.

I'm an elementary teacher and am constantly surrounded by a multitude of germs. In an effort to preserve my health, I decided to give these a try. The large unit lives in my classroom and runs 24/7 all school year long, and it definitely helps! (Healthier teacher, healthier students, everyone is happy). The two small units are plugged in my bathroom and bedroom. I live in the Bay Area, where mold is a problem, but I have yet to see (or smell) any in my home. In my opinion, you quickly become accustomed to the noise. Plus, I only have to change the bulbs about once every six months. Germ Guardian rocks!

PS: When I got married a year ago my husband asked what those "things" were and if they had to be on all the time. After catching a massive bug from my students he insists that I keep them running, and we've enjoyed perfect health since.

"Fan quit working after one week" 2008-11-30
By Mr. Chem (Spring, Texas USA)
For the one week it actually worked, it did fine. However, after one week the fan quit working making it totally useless. I returned it and will purchase some other UV-C device but definitely not a Germ Guardian.

 "Works Very Well" 2008-11-25
By Ricky Lee (Southern PA)
Ive read other reviews on the product such as "falls out of outlet". As a contractor and after using this item myself I'm here to tell you if that's happening you have a worn electrical outlet. Ive been in homes where outlets were so worn a standard cord would barely stay in. The unit is quiet and versatile with the adjustable prongs that allow you to plug it in several positions. You will need to change the UV bulb once a year at about $15.

 "Great Choice" 2008-11-22
By Jesse
We have two of these small units in our downsized five-room retirement apartment. Our larger bathroom always smells fresh now. (I don't think the ceiling vent is doing its job.) The other unit is in the 10 x11 kitchen. I have noticed that cooking odors are no longer reeking through the apartment and store-bought air fresheners are a thing of the past. I'm a Happy Camper!
